11.4 POWER CONTROL: THE SYSTEMATIC APPROACH Kawadia and Kumar [31] suggest that cross-layer design in wireless networks should be considered holistically because one cross-layer interaction can affect not only the layers concerned, but also other layers of protocol stack. Two loosely correlated crosslayer designs may lead to disastrous unintended consequences on overall performance. Simulation results in reference 53 support this argument. The authors compared the performance of a power-aware routing protocol PARO [9] with the performance of minimum hop routing protocol (MHRP), using basic-like power control in the MAC layer, and showed that the latter one saved more energy. Moreover, since basic-like power control does not increase the spatial reuse of medium, and PARO would introduce more hops in the routes, it can cause a degradation of network throughput. Thus, in order to improve the network performance or save energy, we need to tackle transmission power control problem in a systematic approach, taking into account the MAC, network, and transport layers together.
